I started my career in workplace and business psychology three decades ago. My job took me to some far flung places over the years and I learned a lot about organisations and the world of work. I also learned about vocational transitions, and eventually it was my turn to make one... and I switched to therapeutic psychology.
It was then that I discovered the deep fulfillment that can come from helping people overcome real obstacles in their lives - from supporting them to heal from emotional wounds or distressing experiences that they never thought they would or could recover from.
Back in my pragmatic corporate and HR consulting days I was skeptical that there were psychological therapies out there that actually worked - and I mean really worked, permanently. But truly there are.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a premium treatment for trauma, whether it is a direct result of an acute (e.g. life threatening) traumatic event resulting in PTSD or from emotionally-wounding experiences from early childhood through teenage years and into adulthood. I use therapies that complement EMDR as well, especially Resource Therapy.
Stress is often circumstantial, in that it is related to issues that can be dealt with by making decisions - remove the issue, the stress goes - but it can also last for a long time because decisions are difficult.
Depression is often based in regret, guilt, shame, and confusion over past events. Anxiety is often based in fear or underlying beliefs about inadequacy. So it is not hard to see that past events that left emotional wounds are quite possibly (or at least partly) what we should be looking to heal.
Certain therapies are best at tackling certain issues, so a range of therapeutic approaches is, I believe, what is often needed. I use elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), my knowledge of Personality Psychology, and a good amount of Psychoeducation in addition to EMDR and its complementary protocols.
Partners struggling to connect? Good relationships aren't actually 'rocket science', but so many of us battle with them - and in them. Gottman methodology is an excellent set of research-based tools for not just easing the turmoil and breaking deadlock, but also for bringing people together in understanding, direction, mutual appreciation, and affirmation - even after a traumatic rift or upheaval.
Sometimes, many of the issues that arise in relationships stem from our own individual emotional wounds that may have originated before we even met our partner - but the link is often hidden or obscure. Understanding and addressing these underlying issues can also be extremely helpful in getting partnerships back on track.
Feeling like your path is unclear? Feel like a small cog in a vast machine? Just not happy where you are? Overwhelmed, or even bullied at work?
Career choice or job change is often confusing, and can have far reaching consequences. How do I unlock my potential? What is my potential anyway? I am trained/accredited in a wide range of tools that are relied upon in industry to screen candidates, develop employees, or assess suitability for certain roles or fields. A large part of my career has been spent matching people's skills, interests and personalities with jobs, and also in developing better managers - it remains a passion of mine.
Workplace challenges can be numerous. It can be about relationships, operational style, management (good & bad), company culture, or simply being a perfectly round peg in an uncomfortably square hole. Bullying often says more about the bully than it does about you, but unfortunately it often doesn't feel that way. Of course, we bring a lot of ourselves to work, and that includes predispositions, our emotional hurts, and damaged self esteem - so workplace issues aren't always just about the workplace either.
